New DTS Play-Fi tech brings wireless surround sound experience to home cinema

The new DTS Play-Fi Home Theatre technology adds surround sound capability to TVs wirelessly by working over Wi-Fi.

Described by DTS as the ‘first-of-its-kind’, Play-Fi Home Theatre is said to solve long-standing issues relating to poor sound quality from ever thinner TVs and the limited appeal of surround sound in the home due to the inherent aesthetic challenges of speaker wires and HDMI cables.

As it is a wireless solution, Play-Fi Home Theatre gives users a number of options for configurations to wirelessly upgrade a TV’s audio performance and bring surround sound to a room. Consumers can use the TV’s built-in speakers as part of the surround system or upgrade them with a Play-Fi enabled soundbar or discrete Play-Fi enabled front speakers to improve audio quality without creating unsightly wiring between TVs and external speakers or electronics. They also have the option of adding Play-Fi enabled speakers as surround speakers to envelope the listener in immersive sound.

Up to two Play-Fi enabled subwoofers can be added to bring bass to the experience. Users can also utilise Play-Fi’s complementary functionality, like multiroom grouping of the TV with Play-Fi enabled speakers for music and TV audio, and app-based headphone listening.

Ideal for rooms of any size, DTS Play-Fi automatically adapts to the number of speakers connected to the TV, giving users a modular way to meet the needs of their room or a path to upgrade over time as they purchase more.

TVs featuring DTS Play-Fi Home Theatre will hit the market in Q3 of 2021 and are compatible with the existing ecosystem of Play-Fi soundbars, speakers, and amplifiers in the market today.
