Sonos unveils next gen Beam with Dolby Atmos support

Wireless speaker manufacturer, Sonos has launched a new version of its Beam soundbar which delivers an upgraded and more immersive sound experience as well as support for Dolby Atmos.

Beam (Gen 2) is designed to upgrade the home cinema experience and is compatible with over 100 streaming services available in the Sonos app.

Dolby Atmos is also now supported so viewers can enjoy immersive sound technology that envelopes the viewer in sound. Beam (Gen 2) also features more processing power and newly developed phased speaker arrays in order for it to steer and localise sound around the room for a more lifelike experience. The speaker is also now compatible with HDMI eARC to connect to the TV to allow it to play movies and games in even higher definition sound with support for new audio formats.

Featuring a sleeker design, it has an updated polycarbonate grille that is precisely perforated to allow the speaker to sound clear while blending seamlessly into the home aesthetics. Beam (Gen 2) features just two cables and new NFC capabilities to ensure an easy and seamless set up. Users can open the Sonos app, follow a few prompts and tap their phone to Beam.

The new Beam features sustainable packaging, including a premium uncoated kraft paper, a gift box made of 87% sustainable paper and no single-use foam.

Beam (Gen 2) can be placed in front of a standing TV or easily mounted to the wall with the existing Sonos Wall Mount for Beam. It can be controlled with the Sonos app, the TV remote, multiple voice assistants, Apple AirPlay 2, music service apps and more.

The speaker company has also revealed that it plans to support Amazon Music’s Ultra High Definition audio, which will allow listeners to hear tracks in lossless audio up to 24 bit / 48kHz on their Sonos speakers, as well as Dolby Atmos Music. With no extra costs to Amazon Music Unlimited customers, Ultra HD will be available on all S2 devices, except Play:1, Play:3, Playbase, and Playbar. Dolby Atmos Music will be available on Arc and Beam (Gen 2).

Sonos has also announced plans to add support for decoding DTS Digital Surround Sound later this year via the S2 platform on the Playbar, Playbase, Amp, Arc, and both generations of Beam.

Beam (Gen 2) is available to preorder now, with general availability starting on 5 October. It is priced at £449.
