AVL PRO - Winner Of CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Award 2003 For Best Integrated Home: Under $400,000 (25/11/2003)

Essay

The client's general requirement for the project:

This is a part time recreational residence for our client and his family. It was critical that this home provide entertainment and maintain the elegance of the décor that the interior designer created, while keeping a focus on ease of use for everyone.

Provide a general description of the clients' (kids, ages, profession, etc.):

Our client is a professional with a wife and daughters. They enjoy the opportunity to retreat from their busy lifestyles into their luxuriously automated condominium.

What special considerations and roadblocks had to be overcome:

This project was a retrofit of an existing 8300 square foot condominium that consisted of a prewire for volume controls and ceiling speakers in selected rooms and a basic infrastructure wiring package.

This project was one of 37 units in a high-rise building with a tight construction schedule of 9 months. Many obstacles had to be overcome with restricted work hours and sharing with other trades of the one construction elevator.

What did you, the designer/installer, do to accomplish the clients requirements and overcome the roadblocks:

We were very pro-active through all design and construction phases.

Communication with all other trades and field project management provided us the information needed to keep the project on time and within specifications.

Our team upgraded the existing wiring for adding computer networking and home automation as well as to be altered to fit the new interior floor plans. Strict attention was paid to placement of any in-wall or ceiling devices so that they coordinated with the many interior design details added to the wall and ceiling treatments.

We placed in-wall touch panels in the great room, dining room, her bath, his bath and kitchen. Wireless touch panels at convenient tabletop locations are located in the master bedroom, family room, library, theater as well as in each of the four guest suites.

Describe the five most used functions of the system and how they benefit the client:

1. The audio system with Crestron touch panels allows the client to select any genre of music from any location and to distribute it throughout the residence.

2. Crestron control of the theater equipment provides ease of use and a preview window for the client to cue new selections.

3. The wireless lighting control system allows the client to easily select scenes from lighting control keypads as well as through any Crestron control panel.

4. The master bedroom plasma on a lift is also controlled by the Crestron system for simplicity of control. When the plasma is not in use it can easily retract down into the built-in cabinet and blend with the aesthetics of the bedroom décor.

5. The broadband networking throughout the residence provides the convenience and technology for the needs of every family member.
