Minimalist multiroom installation in London (4/5/2009) By The Pleasure Home The Brief For a budget of GBP35,000, our brief was to provide an easy-to-use multiroom audio system and a unique dedicated home cinema room in a very special house in London, where any Hi-Fi component, when visible, is a work of art. Everything else should be hidden from view. Planning and implementation The first phase of the project focused on creating a home cinema room using a unique 80-inch acrylic screen, a hidden projector and the transparent Ferguson Hill FH001 speakers. The acrylic screen is specially produced for us, and was chosen because it blends into the wall when not in use. The projector was built into a special hollow table with suitably created ventilation. Similarly, the 5.1 surround sound amplifier and Sky unit were hidden inside the hollow front table - all controlled via a single remote controller. The client also has an Xbox 360 and Media Center PC connected to the system, onto which he stores all of his family photos, music collection and films - for instant viewing.
The second phase of the project focused on creating a wireless multiroom system using the new miniature Ferguson Hill FH007s and Morel in-ceiling eyeball speakers, with individual control of music for the kitchen, breakfast room, dining room, hallways and bedroom using the Sonos remote. The client particularly liked the Morel SD20 in-ceiling speakers, not only for their excellent sound quality but the fact that they were sealed units, so that there was minimum leakage of sound to the upstairs bedrooms. The eyeball feature allowed the sound to be better directed at the listener rather than straight down.
The installation was all carried out with no visible wiring, despite this being a completed house. All cabling was channelled into the wood flooring, and because underfloor heating was already in place, the cable channels were carefully cut into the wood strips so as not to disturb the heating system underneath. Most cabling was pulled using rods so as to cause minimal disruption to this pristine home. The cabling for the electric blinds was channelled into the walls. Unlike many traditional custom installers, we pride ourselves on being a 'one-stop shop' to our clients, so we will, when requested, not only make good, but redecorate the room. Indeed most of our clients want to give us a list of cosmetic and summary requirements. They are not interested in the technicalities or issues, which they leave for us to solve. The time taken for this project, from start to finish, was one month. Conclusion The client is absolutely delighted with the results achieved. "Our design requirements of technology that complemented the modern style of the house whilst being discreet, were well and truly exceeded". The end result is that the woman of the house also loves using it! The client has continually updated the installation over the past six months, adding more rooms with Sonos playback (seven to date), and most recently, updated his living room with the latest 1920p technology based around the new 'ultrathin' range of televisions. Equipment list 14 X Morel SD20 sealed in-ceiling eye ball speakers.
