MechoShade Home Systems Expands Control of Its Shading Products Through ZigBee Wireless Technology and the Internet (25/11/2008)

CEDIA US Expo 2008

From an integrator's perspective, window-covering and drapery systems can be controlled without wires, and the operation is integrated into a centralized unit that includes all other home-automation systems. "It's a clear leap forward in terms of installation ease, design flexibility, and customer interface," claims Jan Berman, president of MechoShade Systems, the parent company of MechoShade Home Systems.

This expanded control and flexibility is demonstrated with MechoShade Home Systems' two new products: the MechoRF(tm) (Control4(r) 2-Zone Interface) and the IQ/485(tm)-IPI (Internet Protocol Interface). The MechoRF(tm) wirelessly integrates window-covering and drapery systems with Control4(r) wireless-based ZigBee(r) communication technology. And the IQ/485(tm)-IPI expands control of window-shading systems through the Internet.

Control4(r) is a whole-home automation manufacturer, which markets automated and networked window coverings and draperies that enhance homeowner convenience and comfort. The MechoRF(tm) enables seamless operation with the Control4(r) Composer V1.3.2 system or later. With ZigBee(r)'s spread-spectrum and wireless-mesh radio communication, no wiring is required for a connection from the motors of the window coverings to the Control4(r) system.

MechoShade Systems, partnership with Control4(r) marries the two companies' WindowManagement? and affordable home-automation technologies as fully interoperable, turnkey systems. The technologies also broaden integrators' ability to create a variety of lifestyle scenes, specifically in home theaters and dining and living rooms. The technologies eliminate the configuring of a system from disparate components and the risk of lengthy in-field debugging.

"These two additions, results of the MechoShade Systems partnership with Control4(r), will dramatically affect how technicians, designers, and project managers integrate window coverings and draperies into home and commercial-building automation projects," suggests Mr. Berman.

"The technology helps integrate WindowManagement(r) subsystems with master home-automation controls and building automation and management systems," Mr. Berman notes. "WindowManagement(r) subsystems now can contribute to a residence's overall energy conservation, homeowner convenience, and comfort. In addition, subsystems for buildings can operate seamlessly with lighting, cooling, heating, security, and privacy systems."

The IQ/485(tm)-IPI opens the door for user control of window-shading systems via the Internet. Shading and drapery systems can now be accessed and controlled through a simple Wi-Fi connection with an Apple(r) iPod(r) touch, a laptop, or similar devices. The IQ/485(tm)-IPI seamlessly integrates with control systems by other manufacturers, such as Crestron(r), Lutron(r), Vantage/Legrand(r), and Control4(r), through MechoShade Systems' IQ/485(tm) Network Interface (NI) card, introduced at last year's CEDIA tradeshow.
