Tannoy announces new, more flexible TS-Series of active subwoofers (12/8/2009) Tannoy’s new TS range of active subwoofers addresses the demand for powerful, accurate and tuneful bass from a compact and discreet enclosure. Evolving the award-winning TS series design, the new line-up brings substantial improvements in performance, LF extension and flexibility through new cabinets, new electronics and a host of new features across the range. Most obvious upgrades include the addition of speaker-level inputs, chunkier cabinets with profiled edges and a top-mount control panel with LCD display. Boasting BASH amplifiers up to 500Watt RMS, highly linear drivers with oversize magnets, comprehensive EQ adjustment and installer features, the new TS series is Tannoy’s most flexible and formidable subwoofer range to date.
The inclusion of speaker-level input circuitry allows the most accurate integration with main speakers to create a system with seamless LF extension. With the current trend towards slim-line loudspeakers the new TS range represent the ideal solution to the physical LF constraints of these smaller volume designs. The result is a tight and articulate stereo system offering the best of both worlds - small footprint main speakers and bass extension as low as 21Hz. RCA inputs are naturally included for LFE duties and new filtering electronics allows both line-level and speaker level inputs to function simultaneously for the ideal LF set-up in multichannel systems. The compact cabinets have been extensively beefed up for this latest TS generation, crafted from 18mm MDF on all sides and braced at critical joints. The more rigid structure affords less resonant energy within the sealed-cabinet leading to more accurate and tuneful LF reproduction. The ultra-compact TS801 offers incredible punch and extension from a cabinet less than one cubic foot in volume while the larger TS1001 and TS1201 models offer unrivalled bass depth and control for their size. The top-mount control panel with LCD display hints at the new electronic control circuitry beneath. In addition to fully variable gain, upper frequency roll-off and phase (0-180 degrees) control, the new TS range offers single point parametric EQ from 20Hz upwards with +/- 6dB variable Q control, a shelf filter to tilt the response according to room size, and three preset EQ modes – Audio, Video and Night. Audio mode offers the flattest and most extended bass response while the Video mode tunes primary LFE frequencies for greater drama and dynamic impact. Night mode subtly reduces gain, extension and dynamic range for the most articulate best bass response without disturbing close neighbours. The driver and amplifier pairings follow the same highly regarded formula found in previous TS-series ranges. This marries potent BASH amplifiers of 200Watt, 300Watt and 500Watt with forward firing drivers of 8in, 10in and 12in diameter in the TS801, TS1001 and TS1201 respectively. A patented tracking switch-mode power supply, crossovers in the digital domain and long-throw drivers with massive roll-surrounds for superior excursion mean the new TS-series offers substantial performance improvement over earlier generations: More punch, more dynamic range, greater musical articulation and LF extension some 5-6Hz deeper than predecessor models. For installers or those wishing to hide their subwoofer away, all features can be accessed through the TS range’s IR interface with all hexadecimal program codes supplied in the manual. Approximate UK retail pricing: TS-1201 £599.90
