SIM2 introduce the MICO 50 Eco-friendly LED projector (15/12/2009)

SIM2, the Italian manufacturer of high-performance HD home theatre and commercial projectors that have a worldwide reputation for pristine video performance and innovative design, are proud to announce the new star in their projector line up, the MICO 50. Mico means sparkle, shine or be bright, and there is no doubt that LED has come of brightness with this latest addition to SIM2’s award winning Grand Cinema™ series. The projector combines 3LED illumination with 1080P DLP® imaging technology to deliver clearer, brighter and more vibrant images with ultra-low maintenance in a truly green projector.

The traditional UHP lamp and colour wheel assembly of single chip DLP is replaced by a trio (one for each colour red, green and blue) of high power Phlatlight LEDs, which combine the benefits of LED and laser technologies to deliver high brightness from a small point source with extremely fast on/off times and median lifetimes well above 100,000 hours. By replacing the need for a colour wheel with the much faster switching LEDs, the sequential colour artefact (commonly known as rainbow) is eliminated and there is a significant reduction in colour smear and blur in fast moving images. The LEDs provide a much larger and more accurate colour gamut, which can be accurately calibrated using SIM2’s Live Colour Calibration software, and also deliver contrast ratios of up to 100,000:1. All of these results in a distinct improvement in picture quality, but the benefits don’t stop there.

Until now, one of the disadvantages of projectors has been the fact that the lamp has needed changing every few years, which frustrates customers and installers and has a negative effect on the environment due to the Mercury and Lead content of the lamps. With LED technology the light source will last the lifetime of the product reducing frustration and environmental impact. Combine this with the fact that this new generation of projectors are more energy efficient and have instant switch off with no need for annoying lamp cooling, and the projector becomes suitable for every day TV viewing and gaming applications, as well as the traditional special event viewing of projectors past, whilst making this by far the most energy and cost efficient way to get a big picture in the home.

All the connectivity and features demanded by custom-theatre designers and installers are present in this product: two selectable HDMI inputs (both fully HDCP-compliant), inputs for legacy formats including composite, S-video, component and an RGBHV (VGA) connection. Both RS-232 serial and USB ports are included to ease connectivity for control and software/firmware communications.12-volt trigger outputs, IR-sensor inputs, and anamorphic projection functionality for uncompromised widescreen reproduction of films in 2:35:1 format are all built in for total flexibility of installation.

With all these advantages and more, it will come as no surprise that this is the first in a series of LED projectors that SIM2 will be launching over the next year, demonstrating their commitment to developing a range of projectors utilising this technology to meet a variety of applications and price points. The MICO 50 is now shipping at an MSRP of £14,995.
