Watteco and Coronis Collaborate on Compact, Ultra-Low Power Powerline Communication/ Wireless Gateway for Home Automation (11/3/2010) First pilot deployment pending with Global Partner Serving local Utilities and Internet Service Providers Watteco SAS, a leading System on Chip (SoC) manufacturer of Ultra Power Line Communication (PLC) for energy efficiency and intelligent home control applications and Coronis, a leading global designer and developer of OEM wireless solutions for ultra-low-power (ULP) and long-range sensor monitoring networks today announced they are collaborating to design a compact, low-cost gateway. The gateway merges both Watteco’s Watt Pulse Communications (WPC®) and Wavenis® wireless technologies. The resulting gateway will comply with the standard DIN-rail format and can be plugged into the electrical control panels of French and European homes. Watteco and Coronis are partnering with BPL Global, a leading Smart Grid technology company that is working with local utilities and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deploy home-automation and smart solutions during 2010. This dual mode “green-tech” WPC-Wavenis platform provides new service capabilities at an extremely aggressive price point for an industrial solution. The combination of PLC and wireless technologies in an ultra compact module, as part of a robust and cost effective gateway, opens a new world for easy installation, flexibility and scalable networking of sensors and actuators. Watteco and Coronis have designed their solution to support the shared vision of converged Internet Protocol (IP) addressing that will drive the mass market adoption in IP-compatible Smart Grid gateways, sensors and actuators with ultra low power performance. Coronis will provide its next generation Wavenis-enabled communication platform based on its new SOC design and will offer its industrial field-proven experience based on its more than 4,000,000+ Wavenis–enabled devices that have been deployed worldwide. The gateways’ companion WPC technology uses a PLC micro-modem. Unlike other traditional PLC systems which inject energy in the form of carriers, WPC technology uses the resonance frequencies of the grid to communicate. "Working with innovative partners like Watteco and Coronis allows BPLG to strengthen our Power SG® smart grid solutions, a portfolio unmatched by any supplier in the industry," said Pascal Julienne, President Executive Director, BPL Global EMEA. "Advances in secure, cost-effective communications technologies make it possible to connect millions of energy assets at the edge of the grid such as sensors, customer loads, solar cells, wind turbines, distributed generation, and energy storage. This will significantly increase the efficiency and reliability of our electric system and allow electric utilities and their customers to lower their carbon footprints in accordance with EU environmental goals." Laurent Maleysson, Managing Director of Coronis stated: “Thanks to the professional collaboration between our organizations, Coronis is proud to help Watteco to successfully deliver the first consumer-oriented PLC/Wavenis gateway that is able to serve the needs of markets such as home & building automation, smart metering and smart grids, alarm & security, industrial automation and more.” “The co-existence of Wireless and Wireline solutions for the various Control and Command Smart Energy markets, such as home control, is becoming a de facto market requirement,” said Eric Berthaud, President of WATTECO SAS. “This alliance with Coronis is going to enhance smart grid development by providing a new way of communication and we look forward to jointly provide this innovative solution to our customers.” www.bplglobal.net
