LG Electronics sets UK launch of its full 3D portfolio for May (12/3/2010)

New 3D TV models, 3D Blu-ray player and Sky 3D compatibility set to lead Brits into ultimate viewing experience

LG Electronics (LG) unveils plans to launch its full 3D portfolio from May to meet increasing interest in 3D across the nation. LG have been the first in the UK to introduce its passive 3D technology LCD TV (LD920) which is being rolled out in pubs across the UK and Ireland. Viewers will be able to watch live football including Premier League matches broadcast by Sky in 3D, prior to the introduction of Sky 3D to millions of homes later this year. In addition, this spring, LG will lead the way in home entertainment launching its Full LED 3D Ready TV (LX9900) and 3D Blu-ray player (BX580) for the home.

The new LG Full LED 3D Ready TV provides the ultimate in home entertainment with better picture quality and unique single layer ultra slim Infinia design, virtually eliminating the space between the screen and the bezel so they seamlessly blend together. Available in both 47in and 55in, the televisions use active 3D technology meaning all the components, that allow the picture to become 3D are housed within the glasses worn by the viewer.

The active shutter system within the glasses, permits the use of 1080p (progressive image) which means that each eye gets a full HD image for a more detailed, complete picture. Beyond 3D technology, other features include built-in Freeview HD, so viewers can still watch 2D HDTV at home with five times improved picture quality without any subscription or contract. In addition, viewers can also access their favourite internet applications through the LG NetCast feature. As the TV is Full LED and houses LG Spot Control technology along with TruMotion 400Hz, viewers can enjoy premium clarity and movement of the picture with unsurpassed colour definition taking them even closer to the action. All these features are packed into the beautiful Infinia design which will fit into any style conscious living room.

The perfect companion to the LX9900 is the LG 3D Blu-ray player, the BX580, which does even more than add an extra dimension to your favourite films to really bring them to life. With HDMI 1.4, the BX580 plays 3D Blu-ray movies, as well as normal Blu-ray disks and DVDs. This stylish player, also boasts a number of features to make accessing extra information easier, including wireless technology to access internet applications, such as YouTube, weather and online photos and the ability to stream information from your home PC or mobile directly to your living room. The BX580 3D Blu-ray player coupled with the LX9900 enables consumers to have the complete 3D experience in their home.

While consumers are waiting to bring 3D TVs into their living rooms, they can experience it for themselves thanks to the LG 47 inch LD920 passive 3D TV. Available for commercial use, the LD920 is the perfect solution for bringing immersive 3D quality images to the masses in an affordable way providing pub-goers with the opportunity to watch live 3D TV such as football matches.

Sky confirmed at this year’s CES that Sky 3D – its forthcoming 3D TV service and Europe’s first 3D TV channel – will be compatible across LG’s entire range of 3D TVs. Sky 3D, which launches in pubs and clubs this April and then to more than 2.1 million Sky’s Sky+HD homes later this year, will work across all passive and active 3D TVs which are due to come to market, including all those developed by LG.

Stephen Gater, Head of Marketing LG Home Entertainment Company, commented, “We’ve seen such enormous interest and excitement from consumers around 3D TV that we choose to bring the LX9900 televisions to the shelves ahead of schedule, to meet the demand. The new active 3D TV, matched with the 3D Blu-ray player, means our customers can experience the wonder, excitement and thrills generated by 3D programming and movies from the comfort of their own sofa.”

Brian Lenz, Director of Product Design and TV Product Development at Sky, comments: “Alongside innovative TV manufacturing partners, we’re looking forward to helping the UK take a global lead in bringing 3D into the home. Whether active or passive, Sky 3D will be compatible with LG’s entire range of 3D screens, so we look forward to our Sky+HD customer base having a simple and straightforward way to experience the wonder of 3D TV.”
