CEA Publishes ANSI/CEA-2017-A Portable Media Connection Standard (7/6/2010) Standard Allows for Faster Transfer of High-Definition Audio and Video Data The Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA)® Portable, Handheld and In-Vehicle Electronics Committee today announced the publication of ANSI/CEA-2017-A, Common Interconnection for Portable Media Devices. The standard adds capability to the Portable Media Device Connector (PDMI) for USB 3.0 and VESA’s DisplayPort. Utilizing this new standard will allow consumers to download HD movies in just over one minute, versus ten minutes with the previous USB 2.0 technology. “CEA’s Portable, Handheld and In-Vehicle Electronics Committee brought together companies across all sectors of the portable device market to establish this standard that will support future advancements in portable media,” said Brian Markwalter, vice president of research and standards for CEA. “As our industry continues to innovate, bringing new products and services to consumers around the world, it is essential that we create standards that support the new technologies coming to market.” “This standard will pave the way for future innovations across the portable media spectrum,” said Craig Wiley, director of technical marketing of Parade Technologies and vice chair, VESA, Board of Directors. “Having an established electrical interface to accommodate uncompressed HD audio and video data, high speed file transfer, device recognition and control will open the door for further protocol refinement. Ultimately this will lead to flexible and reliable device interoperability, providing a convenient and universal portable device interface for the consumer.” CEA leads technology manufacturers in fostering CE industry growth by developing industry standards and technical specifications that enable new products to come to market and encourage interoperability with existing devices. CEA maintains an unmatched reputation as a credible and flexible standards making body and has earned ANSI accreditation. Through more than 70 committees, subcommittees and working groups, the CEA Technology and Standards program provides a unique and efficient forum where technical professionals throughout the industry develop a unified technology roadmap and address technical issues critical to the CE industry growth.
