The Broadband Security Centre announces new City & Guilds-accredited course making digital technology training accessible to secondary schools (13/7/2010) UK secondary schools now have access to an accredited course that has been specifically developed by a leading UK monitored security company to fill a yawning gap in an area of digital technology that is already a major skills bottleneck for the industry: the integration of a rapidly growing range of applications for businesses and homes through a wireless network. The Level 1 City & Guilds course was developed by the Broadband Security Centre (BBSC) at Middlesbrough to serve as Additional Specialist Learning for 14-16 year olds. It enables secondary schools to give their students an invaluable grounding in wireless network technology, such as routers, using their existing resources. The course also dovetails with the Digital Home Technology Integrators (DHTI) 7575 Level 2 diploma, which was developed by BBSC to support career progression in a wide range of sectors. Matt Davison, BBSC’s Head of Education, said: - “We know from our own experience that there is already a shortage of technicians with the skills and technical knowledge to integrate applications in a wireless network and demand will rocket across a huge number of market sectors as the digital revolution gathers pace. “That is why we have been so tenacious in presenting the industry perspective to City & Guilds and in developing a course that can be delivered by schools with readily available equipment such as digital TVs and routers. “We have also led the industry in the formation of the Wire Free Federation (WFF), which aims both to promote the qualifications within the industry and give end users confidence by providing a register of City & Guilds accredited installers and their companies.” The BBSC is a UK leader in the integration of home devices such as security, safety and household management systems, as well as computers, telephones, home entertainment centres, games consoles, medical monitoring etc. It also supplies hardware and technical support for a national network of installers and provides monitoring/server-hosting services for international OEMs. The training provision delivered by BBSC at its superbly equipped facility at Middlesbrough includes custom training and a suite of short, concentrated ‘Upskill’ courses for installers and technicians.
