Microsoft has announced it will be shutting down Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams.
In a blog on the Microsoft website, Jeff Teper, president, collaborative apps and platforms said, "With Teams, users have access to many of the same core features they use in Skype, such as one-on-one calls and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, Teams offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and building and joining communities for free."
Founded in 2003, Skype became one of the most popular video call platforms. Microsoft bought Skype in 2011 for $8.5bn after outbidding Google and Facebook.
In 2011 the service had about 150 million monthly users; by 2020, that number had fallen to roughly 23 million.
