An entire Welsh village experienced 18 months of broadband outages every morning at 7am due to an old television in one resident’s home.
According to a report, Openreach engineers discovered the issue through an investigation following a cable replacement programme which failed to fix the ongoing problem.
Using a spectrum analyser, engineers found electrical noise which pinpointed the fault. It turned out to be an old TV set emitting a signal which interfered with the entire village’s broadband.
The embarrassed resident of Aberhosan, Powys, has agreed not to use the television anymore and a stable broadband connection has been restored in the village.
It was discovered that the occupant would switch on their TV set at 7am every morning which emitted electrical interference and in turn affected the broadband signal.
Engineer, Michael Jones said: “Our device picked up a large burst of electrical interference in the village. It turned out that at 7am every morning the occupant would switch on their old TV which would, in turn, knock out broadband for the entire village.
“They [the resident] immediately agreed to switch it off and not use it again.”
