Netflix adds spatial audio feature for premium subscribers

Streaming platform, Netflix has introduced a new spatial audio feature for customers signed up to its Premium plan, where users already get 4K video with no adverts and the ability to watch and download to four devices at a time.

With streaming platform subscriptions falling, this new feature is another way to keep its customers and encourage them to upgrade or sign up to the Premium plan.

The new spatial audio feature enhances the stereo sound of TV and movies, creating “an immersive, cinematic sound experience”. Available on any device that supports Netflix, users do not need to have any surround sound speakers or other specialist equipment in order to make the most out of the feature.

It is already available on over 700 of the platform’s most popular titles, such as Stranger Things, The Watcher, Wednesday, and Knives Out: Glass Onion. Users can look for the spatial audio icon next to the content description to see if it is a spatial audio title. When the piece of content is selected to watch, the spatial audio feature is automatically enabled, meaning users do not have to change any settings for it to work.

Users can also search for content supporting spatial audio by typing ‘spatial audio’ into the search bar on Netflix.

When released, a spokesperson for Netflix said: “We’ll also be adding spatial audio to popular new titles as they’re released, including You, Your Place or Mine, Luther: The Fallen Sun, and Tour de France. This truly magical sound experience is a game-changer for the Premium plan viewing experience and we’re excited to add this capability to other features we already support like 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode.”
