Netflix announces high-quality audio feature

Netflix has introduced a new feature to enhance the audio of its films and TV series to take a step towards sound intended by the director.

High-quality audio, the new feature announced by Netflix, is intended to sound closer to the creator’s intentions, and portrays every detail captured for a more enhanced and intense experience.

For homeowners with bandwidth or device limitations, Netflix has made the feature adaptive to deliver the best possible quality audio to match the capabilities.

The idea to introduce the feature cam when members of the team were reviewing ‘Stranger Things 2’ to understand how viewers watch their content at home. They noticed that the sound wasn’t as crisp and clear as it should be through parts of the programme. The problem was addressed and solved by delivering higher bitrates for the audio. Since then, the team have been working on a solution to provide improved audio throughout its content for all viewers.

A member of the Netflix team said: “Often the subtlety of sound may go unnoticed, but it can have a profound impact on the atmosphere of a scene and fundamentally change how a viewer responds to it. The magical combination of sight and sound brings viewers closer to the story, and that’s why we support creative technologies and features like 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and Netflix Calibrated Mode.”
