In a mission to reduce its environmental footprint, Samsung Electronics has announced it is introducing a new eco-friendly packaging for its Lifestyle TV product line up and starts competition for customers to create the best design using the packaging.
The new ‘eco-packaging’ is made from eco-friendly corrugated cardboard and will be used to package The Serif and The Sero.
Not only ensuring the packaging can be recycled, Samsung are also encouraging upcycling by applying a dot matrix design on each side of the boxes, allowing customers to cut the boxes more easily and assemble them into various other uses, such as small end tables or houses for pets.
The company even goes as far as including a manual or guide within the packaging to help customers create household items with the cardboard boxes. The guides can be access by scanning the QR code on the box.
Samsung are looking at typical interior designs used around the lifestyle TVs. For example, owners of The Serif often tend to put shelves and furniture around the TV so Samsung suggests they can use the corrugated cardboard box to create cat houses, magazine racks, and even shelves to store household items and electronic devices, such as the remote control.
Already known for reducing its environmental footprint, Samsung was recognised earlier this year at the CES 2020 Innovation Awards where it won an award for its eco-packaging concept and promoting the efficient use of resources.
To encourage customers to utilise this scheme and upcycle their eco-packaging, Samsung and British lifestyle magazine, Dezeen, are holding a global design competition which starts today (6 April). The two companies will award the most unique and practical designs and will apply the designs into its eco-packaging manual.
Kangwook Chun, executive vice president and head of product strategy team of visual display business at Samsung Electronics, said: “consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that shares similar fundamentals and values as they do, and with our eco-packaging, we believe that we can provide our customers with a new experience that considers the environment as an important way to express themselves.”
