Sonos and IKEA to collaborate on dedicated range for the home

IKEA has announced that is currently working with Sonos on a line of products dedicated to ‘future home sound experiences,’ to be launched in 2019.

We already have seen the fruits of IKEA’s foray into lighting with its ZigBee-compliant ‘Trådfri’ range, but now the retail heavyweight wants to further establish itself in the smart home technology space – and in terms of co-collaborators, they couldn’t have signed on a bigger name in the world of mainstream audio: Sonos.

“When we asked people what sound they associate with their homes many people mentioned that it is music that makes a home,” commented Björn Block, business leader of IKEA Home Smart division.

The plans are the third part of the Swedish company’s special ‘Home Smart’ project, following on from its lighting range and wireless charging offerings (debuted back in 2016).

It’s currently unclear what we can expect from this collaboration – all we know so far that the products will apparently will be designed for integrating music into the home. Whether this means a plywood cabinet for the Alexa-powered Sonos One speaker or a lighting-related product is yet to be seen, however IKEA has said the line will “strive to make it even easier for people to play any song, anywhere in the home, without interrupting the flow of daily life”.

Watch this space for either something innovative or another-impossible-to-put-together product to clutter up your spare bedroom.
