Following the release of the Thread 1.0 technical specification this summer, the Thread Group recently launched the first phase of its product certification program. Led by the Thread Group in conjunction with UL, the program provides rigorous testing for products that use Thread to help ensure that they work together effortlessly and securely right out of the box. More than 30 products and components from Thread Group members have been submitted for certification, and Thread certified software stacks from ARM, Freescale and Silicon Labs will be available this month.
In addition, OSRAM, a leader in the global lighting market, has joined the Thread Group's board of directors.
"Having already made the Thread 1.0 technical specification available to members under Thread's RAND-RF (royalty-free) licensing terms, today we are taking another major step in bringing Thread certified products to market, and ensuring that they are tested for quality, security and interoperability" said Chris Boross, president, Thread Group. "This is great news for our 220 member companies, who are anxious to start using Thread in their products."
Thread products will be tested to validate device behavior for commissioning, networking functionality, security and operation in Thread's network, and may bear the "BUILT ON THREAD" or "THREAD CERTIFIED COMPONENT" logo to help consumers and product developers identify them on the market. And unlike other industry standards where implementers charge royalties or produce something proprietary, Thread's royalty-free licensing terms are designed to aid rapid adoption and reduce confusion by creating a royalty-free pledge between members, so that the entire industry can rapidly adopt thread whilst minimizing costs.
In additional news, OSRAM has joined Thread's board of directors from Munich to support its efforts to establish a solid, secure, and scalable networking foundation in the connected home. OSRAM is one of the world's leading lighting manufacturers, and their portfolio covers the entire value chain from components to lighting solutions.
"Being a part of the Thread Group will significantly strengthen our effort to drive innovative and sustainable lighting solutions that can enhance any environment," said Timon Rupp, CEO, OSRAM Lightify.
"It provides an unprecedented opportunity for OSRAM to collaborate with other visionaries and be on the front lines of driving smart solutions beyond energy savings," said Geert van der Meer, senior vice president, OSRAM Digital Systems.
