Sonos is fighting for your right to party (for charity)

Sonos has introduced a limited edition Beastie Boys-inspired model of its popular Play:5 speaker, with all proceeds going to charity.

No stranger to limited edition models, the latest iteration of the Sonos Play:5 speaker is a little different.

Emblazoned with ‘Beastie Boys’ in some suitably cool hip red font across its grille, the white model of the speaker will be available for a limited time via the manufacturer’s website, its flagship NY store and selected retailers around the world  (…as well as the Beastie Boy’s book tour, nat).

The bespoke speaker was designed by San Francisco graffiti artist Barry McGee, and will be available for the same price as regular Play:5 models. Of the design, McGee says: “A new, linear typeface for the band” alludes to “the intricate wordplay and evolutionary identity associated with an ever-changing artist”, apparently…

Sonos has always had a special connection with the Beastie Boys according to its head of music, Brian Beck, who has said that the first song ever played out loud on a Sonos was ‘No Sleep till Brooklyn’.

The special edition of the Sonos Play:5 will officially go on sale in December for a short run.

A chunk of the proceeds from selling the $499-priced speaker will be split between education-focused charities Peace Sisters (expanding education to underprivileged women in Africa) and Little Kids Rock (bringing music education to disadvantaged schoolchildren in the US).
