Research and advisory firm Gartner has announced that augmented and virtual reality and artificial intelligence are among its top ten technology trends for 2017.
As part of a webcast entitled ‘The Gartner Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2017,’ Gartner forecast that autonomous cars and drone transport will have growing importance in the year ahead, alongside VR and AR.
“It’s not about just the IoT, wearables, mobile devices, or PCs. It’s about all of that together,” said Cearley. “We need to…put the person at the centre. Ask yourself what devices and service capabilities do they have available to them,” said David Cearley, vice president and Gartner fellow, on how ‘intelligence everywhere’ will put the consumer in charge.
“We need to then look at how you can deliver capabilities across multiple devices to deliver value. We want systems that shift from people adapting to technology to having technology and applications adapt to people. Instead of using forms or screens, I tell the chatbot what I want to do. It’s up to the intelligence built into that system to figure out how to execute that.”
Gartner’s Top 10 Technology Trends to affect consumers in the next five years:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Deep learning, neural networks, and natural-language processing, will move beyond traditional rule-based algorithms to create systems that understand, learn, predict and adapt autonomously.
- Intelligent Apps like VPAs (virtual personal assistants)
- Intelligent Things
Drones, autonomous vehicles, and smart appliances shift from stand-alone programming to a collaborative intelligent things model, exploiting applied AI to deliver advanced behaviours and realistic interaction with their surroundings and people.
- Virtual and Augmented Reality
AR and VR will change how people interact with each other and software systems and lead to the hyper-personalisation of apps and services across multiple mobile, wearable, IoT and sensor-rich environments.
- Digital Twins
Dynamic software models of devices or systems using sensor data to improve operations and add value will represent millions of devices within 3-5 years.
- Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers
- Conversational Systems
Chatbots and microphone-enabled devices will grow in importance as consumers regularly interact with multiple devices and a range of endpoints. As device mesh evolves, connection models will expand and feature greater interaction between devices for a seamless digital experience.
- Mesh App and Service Architecture (MASA)
People using apps will have an optimised solution for targeted endpoints in the digital mesh (e.g., desktop, smartphone, automobile), and a continuous experience as they shift across different channels.
- Digital Technology Platforms
Information systems, customer experience, analytics and intelligence, IoT and ecosystems will dominate as the five core digital technology platforms.
- Adaptive Security Architecture
The digital mesh and related platforms and application architectures will grow in importance as security becomes more adaptive.
