How do you reignite interest in a product that’s already achieved mainstream success and a received a host of glowing reviews? You change the colour, of course.
Sonos has partnered up with Danish design collective to bring a splash of colour into the lives of those who don’t already own a Sonos One – but only for a limited time, and at a higher price tag.
Those looking to own Sonos One a little bit different than their neighbours’ white or black model can purchase the speaker in either red, green or yellow (or all options, if you’re feeling flush) – aka the colours of Hay’s “2018 palette.” The pink option released in pictures of the line won’t actually be available, according to sources.
Sonos has always affirmed that it specifically makes its products in black and white so they can blend into the background of a home, until recently (it did launch a blue speaker back in 2015, in collaboration with Blue Note Records). Of course the fact that Alexa technology is now built in to the Sonos One speaker means is a lot less discrete in the home in general.
"Colour is one of the most important tools in the design process, and it was very important we didn't just create a colour scale that looked beautiful," said Hay co-founder, Mette Hay, on the range’s launch. "Colours can hide completely and disappear or provide contrast."
Hay’s line of Sonos One speakers will be released in September, priced at $229/£229 – that’s $/£29 more than keeping things retro. It’s not yet clear how long the limited edition range will be available for.
