Research has indicated that the global interest in streaming platform, Netflix, has risen by 142% over the last year.
The data, which was gathered by LearnBonds, shows that Google searches for Netflix shot up from across the globe between April last year and April this year, with a significant spike during the first week of March 2020.
Looking at the Google trends platform, which analyses the popularity of top search queries in Google Search across various regions and languages, Netflix saw a peak score of 100 by the first week of April 2020, a growth of 12.3% from the last week of March and 142% from a similar period last year.
Before the Covid-19 outbreak, the popularity rating for Netflix remained relatively consistent, and only showing slight fluctuations. Between April 2019 and February 2020, the average popularity score was around 41.
As expected, the research suggests that people are turning to the likes of streaming services for their entertainment while having to stay at home during the lockdown period. According to LearnBonds, Netflix has seen a spike in users in regions that have been hit hard by coronavirus, mainly in Europe.
The rise has been so sharp across Europe that Netflix and other streaming services had to
reduce the streaming quality from last month to lessen the strain on the world’s internet while many are working from home.
Argentina showed to be the country with the most search enquiries for Netflix during the period, receiving a popularity score of 100. Uruguay followed with a score of 98 while Ireland was third on the list with a score of 96.
