Samsung Display, a branch of Samsung Electronics, has announced it will end all production of LCD displays in South Korea and China by the end of 2020.
Currently operating two LCD production lines in South Korea and two dedicated factories in China, Samsung Displays has always played a big part in LCD panels.
However due to a drop in demand, production is being suspended, having already shut down one its two South Korean LCD production lines in October last year.
According to Reuters, the company will turn its focus away from LCD production and convert one of its South Korean LCD lines into a facility to mass produce quantum dot screens.
In a statement to Reuters, Samsung said: “We will supply ordered LCDs to our customers by the end of this year without any issues.”
It has not yet been decided what will happen to the two Chinese factories.
Samsung is not the first displays manufacturer to step away from LCD production as LG Displays announced earlier this year that it too will be stopping its production of LCD TVs by the end of 2020.
