Samsung unveils 110” MicroLED consumer TV

Samsung Electronics has finally revealed a MicroLED TV for the home, with a 110” display.

Following a report earlier this week hinting at a new release coming, the Korean manufacturer has announced the launch and pre-sale of the TV which has already begun in Korea.

In 2018, the company introduced MicroLED to the market with The Wall, a system of configurable modules that could be installed professionally.

Since then, Samsung has promised the release of a consumer-grade MicroLED display, which is now being delivered with this new 110” TV. Unlike its modular counterpart, installation and calibration is streamlined since the new model is prefabricated.

The trend for bigger screens in homes is increasing and enthusiasts are constantly striving for excellent picture quality with vibrant colours and stunning resolution. Using micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and colour filters utilised in conventional displays, the new 110” MicroLED delivers these specifications.

Using self-illuminating pixels, the display is said to express 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB colour gamut, while accurately delivering wide colour gamut images taken with high-end DSLR cameras, resulting in lifelike colours and accurate brightness from the TV’s 4K resolution and 8m pixels.

The 4K HDR content has a new Micro AI Processor behind it enabling it to display bright, vivid, realistic picture quality that is optimised to each scene.

With a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours, the new display uses inorganic materials which are long-lasting and durable for over a decade.

It was previously impossible to mass-produce MicroLED screens as small as 110” for simple home installations but Samsung’s surface mount technology innovations, a long with a new production process derived from its semiconductor business, has made MicroLED technology easier to manufacture, deliver and install. This promises production of even smaller MicroLED models in the future, making it even more accessible to consumers.

Jonghee Han, president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics commented: “As consumers rely on their televisions for more functions than ever, we are incredibly excited to bring the 110” MicroLED to the commercial market. Samsung MicroLED is going to redefine what premium at-home experience mean for consumers around the world.”

Making the display as immersive as possible, its 99.99% screen-to-body ratio removes the black matric and bezel to leave only the screen.

With the launch of the new TV, Samsung has optimised its Smart TV features to take advantage of the 110” size screen. Consumers can use the Multi View feature to comfortably watch up to four sources of content simultaneously on up to 55” sized split screens. This feature allows viewers to watch news, movies, and other apps simultaneously on one screen. They can keep up with multiple sports all at once or stream a walkthrough while playing a video game, for example.

With an integrated Majestic Sound System, the TV delivers 5.1 channel sound with no external speakers, transforming the experience into an immersive home cinema. Featuring Object Tracking Sound Pro, it can identify objects moving on the screen and project the sound to follow the action to create the immersive, realistic experience.

The 110” MicroLED will be available globally in Q1 of next year.
