Disney Research: Real object caught in VR

Disney has released a video showing someone in virtual reality environment catching a real ball.

The demonstration, posted by Disney Research Hub, goes through three visualisations to link the real object to the virtual object. The person catching the ball is even given superhuman reactions as the VR system accurately predicts the ball’s trajectory.

It is one more step in the development of VR and an important one as the technology is increasingly linked to more interactive experiences and the real world.

Although the use of VR in residential space is currently chiefly used for design and planning, developments such as this one from Disney could be huge for realising the technology in home entertainment, particularly in offering unique gaming experiences.

You can find out more and read a detailed paper on the development at Disney Research.
