Fast internet is main concern for UK homebuyers research suggests

A recent survey has found that fast broadband is a top priority for people looking to buy a new home in the UK since the pandemic.

Conducted by Omdia, the research surveyed 294 UK estate agents across the UK and found that, since the start of the pandemic, questions about connectivity and fibre broadband have risen by 69%.

The survey suggests that 34% of buyers are looking for speed of more than 300Mbps, which can add £5,000 to the sale price of a house according to 33% of estate agents. The research also shows that 23% of buyers want 1 Gbps.

Following broadband speeds, 23% of homebuyers say the single most important factor is the size of the property, 20% said broadband quality, 18% said number of bedrooms, 10% said age of the property, and 9% said transport links.

The UK government has recognised this need for faster internet speeds and made a promise earlier this year to provide full-fibre and gigabit-capable broadband to every home and business across the UK by 2025. According to Ofcom, 18.2 million homes in the UK already have access to internet that is 300Mbps or faster. However, the average UK speed is 50.4Mbps.
