LG to debut world’s first 88-in 8K OLED at CES 2018

LG will show a huge 88-in 8K OLED display at CES 2018 in Las Vegas next week, marking the Korean technology giant as the maker of the largest 8K OLED in the world.

The fruits of LG ramping up its investment in developing OLED products will be seen at CES next week, as it officially introduces a screen 11-ins larger than its predecessor – boasting resolution of 7680 x 4320.

The manufacturer continues to make a play for being the talk of the consumer electronics show a year on from debuting its ‘wallpaper-thin’ W series of TVs at CES 2017, with the screen.

Six months before that LG attracted further attention by unveiling a transparent and fully rollable OLED display.

Speaking on its biggest OLED offering to date, In-Byung Kang, executive vice president and chief technology officer at LG Display, said: “The successful development of the world’s first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED.

“OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets.”

LG recently came second in WitsView’s Q3 global ranking of TV vendors by shipments, surpassed only by Samsung, who continue to focus on making a QLED a more viable alternative to OLED for prospective premium TV buyers.

More details about the display are expected to be announced when CES opens to the public on Tuesday 9 January, 2018 (closing on Friday 12 January).
