An Italian electronics designer has developed Audio Bricks, a modular hi-fi concept that turns building bricks into a working audio system.
The system uses patented adapters that connect toy bricks to dedicated circuit boards, which handle integrated functions including amplification, digital-to-analogue conversion, switching and volume control.
Paolo Caviglia launched Audio Bricks on Kickstarter on April 15 this year in an effort to bring the concept to market.
Since then, the project has produced working prototypes including a headphone amplifier, WiFi streamer, loudspeaker and music centre.

Each block is designed as a standalone module that can be assembled, removed or upgraded without rebuilding the entire system.
The concept notably addresses product longevity: as electronics become obsolete, individual modules can simply be replaced to reduce waste and extend the product lifecycle.
Audio Bricks also taps into the maker movement and DIY audio culture; depending on the level of involvement desired, users can buy ready-made products, assemble kits themselves, or even 3D-print certain adapters.
The premise is that hi-fi equipment can become an evolving platform rather than a fixed product, with the final form shaped by users' own designs and requirements.
