KEF announces first product to use Uni-Core technology

KEF has revealed its KC62 Uni-Core Force-Cancelling subwoofer, promising deeper and more powerful bass but in a small form factor.

Using three newly developed technologies, the subwoofer accurately reproduces the original recording for impactful music listening and film watching.

The KC62 is the first product launched to feature the new patent-pending Uni-Core technology, which was announced earlier this month, taking an entirely new approach to subwoofer engineering.

Uni-Core combines high-performance and force-cancellation capabilities through a single motor system with the voice coils concentrically arranged. This allows the cabinet size to be reduced by over a third without affecting the driver excursion of a much larger subwoofer.

P-Flex Surround, also known as Origami Surround, is another newly developed technology which is patent-pending. It resists the acoustic pressure inside the cabinet without limiting sensitivity in the same way traditional surround designs do. To achieve this, it is uniquely pleated in such a way that is inspired by the Japanese paper-folding art, hence the nickname Origami Surround. This meticulous design resists the internal air pressure without adding excessive mass, allowing the driver to move as required by the audio signal, resulting in a deeper bass extension and more accurate, detailed bass reproduction and reduced distortion.

The final new, patent-pending technology used is smart distortion control. This sensorless, motional feedback system helps to correct the slightest of abnormalities that may occur by measuring the current in the voice coil and detecting and correcting any non-linear distortions. This results in a more accurate, less coloured bass performance. This new approach reduces the interaction between signal, amplifier and driver, thus decreasing the potential for distortion.

KEF’s Music Integrity Engine is a bespoke selection of in-house designed DSP algorithms to finetune the KC62’s performance even further. Algorithms included are iBX (Intelligent Bass Extension) and SmartLimiter, which both work together to continually analyse the signal to prevent clipping.

The subwoofer’s twin drivers are powered by 1,000W RMS (two 500W) of specially designed Class D amplification, providing exceptional levels of control and the ability to deliver sudden bursts of power when required.

A versatile solution, the KC62 carries a range of connection options, and includes a line output with HPF to allow for finetuned integration and KEF SmartConnect which eliminates any connection issues. The KC62 is also compatible with the KW1 adaptor kit for simple wireless compatibility.

Featuring a five preset Room Placement Equalisation feature, the KC62 will give the same performance in any room.

Made with extruded aluminium, the curved cabinet is aesthetically pleasing and blends nicely into a home environment. Customers can choose either Black Carbon or Mineral White finishes.

The KC62 will be available from February priced at £1,400 each.
