D-Link launch highlights growing role of AI in ageing-in-place technology

As smart home vendors explore wellbeing and remote care applications, D-Link has launched a camera featuring AI-powered fall detection and privacy-first monitoring.

The new DCS-8610 2.5K QHD Pan & Tilt Pro Wi-Fi Camera combines 2.5K QHD video, 360-degree coverage and AI processing to deliver alerts with a focus on dignity and privacy.

It comes as demand grows for tools that both enable independent living for longer and provide caregivers with greater visibility.

While D-Link positions the DCS-8610 as a consumer product, it’s indicative of a wider trend towards wellness-focused services – an area viewed as a strong growth opportunity for integrators alongside traditional security, networking and entertainment installations.

A noteworthy feature of the camera is AI Fall Detection, which identifies potential fall events and sends notifications to caregivers via the mydlink app.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, making rapid awareness and response a priority for many families.

Auto Person Tracking keeps occupants in view as they move around a room, while two-way audio enables remote communication when needed.

"The future of home monitoring isn't simply about seeing more, it's about seeing smarter," said CJ Chang, CEO of D-Link Corporation.

"With the DCS-8610, we've brought advanced AI technologies typically found in professional surveillance environments into a solution that families can easily deploy at home.

"The result is greater peace of mind for caregivers and greater dignity for the people they care about."

Privacy remains one of the biggest challenges facing home monitoring technologies, particularly in bedrooms and assisted-living environments.

Addressing this, D-Link has included a Hybrid Privacy Mode that uses AI to apply a dynamic mosaic mask over people in the camera's view; caregivers can monitor movement, posture and location without revealing facial features or other identifying details, helping allay concerns associated with video monitoring.

The camera supports both local microSD storage and mydlink Cloud Recording.

Cloud subscribers also gain access to a pre-recording feature that captures footage five seconds before motion is detected, continuing recording for ten seconds after activity ends.

D-Link was established in 1986 and provides networking equipment and AI-powered cloud management services for consumers, businesses and industrial environments.
