CEDIA highlights evolving cybersecurity requirements following new RED legislation

CEDIA has encouraged its members to understand cybersecurity requirements after new requirements came into effect last month for all wireless devices sold in the EU.

The trade association is working on expert-led education to support integrators in response to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which calls for devices to be designed with digital security from the ground up.

From August 1 this year, compliance with RED is a market access requirement for selling products into the EU. The regulations cover lighting systems, thermostats and smart speakers.

In an official article, managing director at CEDIA EMEA Matt Nimmons writes: “As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, so does the responsibility of professionals working in the connected home.

“The RED requirements highlight why cybersecurity must be a core consideration from the outset of any installation, not only to meet compliance, but to ensure long-term performance, reliability and client satisfaction.”

The article also highlights how manufacturers can determine whether their products fall within the scope of RED through SafeShark, a cypersecurity provider.

The platform offers a concise checklist and flow chart, which CEDIA members are encouraged to view: https://www.safeshark.co.uk/resources/ready-to-go-on-red/.

The RED Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 sets clear expectations for manufacturers, requiring that devices:

  • Prevent misuse of networks and data
  • Reduce the risk of unauthorised access
  • Safeguard users’ personal information
  • Ensure the safety of financial transactions, such as in payment devices or kiosks
