Having specified two systems for CUK’s new acoustically-optimised JBL Synthesis cinema, MD Stuart Thomson has underscored the brand’s unique design heritage and complete systems approach as the best way to deliver authentic cinema sound.
Through its early work on specialised horn-loaded systems from the 1930s and by developing the 4675 - the world’s first commercial THX licensed speaker - JBL is recognised for pioneering ‘movie sound’ across the globe.
Its industry-standard 4675 biradial horn/woofer configuration became the blueprint for JBL Synthesis, the original high-end home cinema systems, which introduced commercially-derived horn technology to the early home cinema market of the 1990s.

Thomson said: “It’s no coincidence that the oldest and most revered name in cinema sound is also best placed to supply the scalable versatility and reliability required for repeatable private theatre design success.”
He praises the brand’s two 9.1.4 configurations showcased at CUK’s new demonstration facility in Ascot, featuring Synthesis as a complete turnkey solution in one of its two cinema rooms.
By uniting biradial horn-loaded compression drivers, high sound power woofers, high current capable amplifiers and advanced processing in precision-matched systems, today’s Synthesis lineup of architectural solutions is designed, tested and evaluated to deliver the seat-to-seat precision required for true cinema.
Uniquely, the Synthesis cinema room is supported by an acoustically-isolated multilayer floor, fabric walls and ceiling suspended on shock mounts from the concrete slab above.
Thomson continued: “Our pristine environment for Synthesis means that, for the first time in three decades, integrators and their clients can experience its authentically cinematic capabilities for a range of budgets and deployments. “With its long-evolving horn/compression driver technology and rigorous systems approach, JBL is equipped to deliver not only the ultimate cinema sound experience, but also a definitive one.”
